Understanding that generative AI is not going away, Prof. Mahoney found ways to encourage the use and experimentation of available generative AI tools in CS21 “Foundations of Digital Design”. These examples are from Spring 2024. The core concept is to use generative AI tools but to inject the user’s influence at the very beginning with the use of “Root Media” as input to the AI and then to assemble and edit and mask the results at the end to create the final product. This Human-Machine-Human approach was used in various workflows.
Some results
- Krea.ai was a very effective tool for graphic designers
- Still images generated with AI saved time and produced interesting results with less effort
- Surprising results from the AI often led to unexpected and interesting designs that would not have happened otherwise
- Students found the process fun... mostly
