ILIXR lab is home to many explorations at the intersection of art and technology. The work supported by the lab involves both undergraduate and graduate students focusing on Generative Design and/or XR technologies. We ask the question, where might these emerging technologies enable new forms of expression and experience. Here, we’ve broken the projects down into three categories, Generative Design, Social Interaction in XR, and Science in XR. I hope something here will inspire or delight you.
Generative Design
Building upon decades of experience, James Mahoney works with Dartmouth students to explore the enduring question of how emerging technology opens up new opportunities for expression and interesting experiences. Nothing has been more transformative than the recent rise of Large Language Models and Generative AI. Our explorations involve finding novel ways to include the human in the loop of Generative AI combining Machine Learning techniques with heuristics based algorithms.
Social XR
James Mahoney and a team of students works in collaboration with Adjunct Professor Michael Cohen (Meta) examining ways to improve social interaction in VR. SILvr (Social Interaction in VR) produced an experimental VR laboratory called QuickSILvr to facilitate this work. ILIXR is an extension of this effort.

Science XR
ILIXR coordinates efforts across campus with scientists exploring how XR technologies can be employed in the sciences, either directly or for educational purposes.
