The initial experiment was the Underground Theater in QuickSILvr. The main questions revolved around how might the theater experience change in a virtual environment - no bad seats for example. Our inquiry revealed several advantages and a few disadvantages. In this work, the audience experiences the performance from one location, like a camera, that can be moved and positioned dynamically during the performance by a stage manager with a stage manager device interface. Further the stage can be fully controlled, changed, animated and lit interactively as the performance team sees fit. This dynamic flexibility adds new dimensions to live performances that are difficult in traditional theater.

We formed a collaboration between the DEV studio, John Bell (Humanities) Prof. Monica Ndounou (Theater) and James Mahoney (ILIXR - Computer Science - Digital Arts) to build upon the early success of our inquiries into live theater in VR using the SILvr platform. Our goal was to extend this work to provide a space for Black Storytelling and to further explore what it means to be an audience member or a performer in a virtual environment.
